Open Show Hong Kong Launch Media Release
Open Show, the global organization that organizes live events worldwide, is pleased to announce their first event in Hong Kong. The public will get a chance to see compelling works and interact directly with seven international photographers, each of whom who will be presenting projects featuring 20 images. The headlining presenter is renowned New Zealand street photographer Jonathan van Smit, who will be presenting ‘City of Dreams.’
Other photographers who have been selected to present at Open Show’s first Hong Kong exhibition are Yoav Horesh, Brett Elmer, Thomas Luk, Kenny Yung, Tse Oi Lam and Sean Creamer.
The King of Hong Kong street photography, Jonathan van Smit has been photographing in Hong Kong since early 2008. His photographs are stark and gritty depictions of the underbelly of Kowloon. His work has been described as ”raw, sometimes shockingly so, but never sensationalist. It’s full of boredom, sadness, loneliness and neglect”.
Israeli professor of photography, Yoav Horesh has exhibited nationally and internationally in galleries and museums including Germany, Italy, Israel, the United States, Hong Kong and also with Amnesty International. Yoav’s work was featured, written about and published in magazines, art journals and websites across three continents and he has given public lectures/artists talks in art schools, universities and galleries in The United States and Europe. He will be presenting ‘Where We Stand’, the project takes a look at how people perceive and relate to public space.
Australian, Brett Elmer is currently working on his PhD thesis and will be presenting ‘The Ongoing Demolition of Uyghur Culture’, a photography project which he hopes reflects the analysis and research he is conducting. The project is related to Chinese government policies enacted to hasten the assimilation of the Uyghur minority of China’s north-west Xinjiang province with the greater Chinese state. Some of these photographs have been published by The World Uyghur Congress.
Thomas Luk is a Hong Kong photographer who has had the chance to visit some textile factories in China. He will be presenting ‘Working Hours’, a document of the daily lives of the factory workers in these establishments.
Kenny Yung will be presenting ‘Thug on the Streets’, snapshots of interesting street scenes in Hong Kong.
Tse Oi Lam will be presenting a mixed media project, ‘HIDE’, which is based on surrealism and feminism.
South African, Sean Creamer will be presenting ‘Crystal Castles’ a photography project that explores the world within a world concept in Hong Kong.
The hotly anticipated launch will take place at 8pm on December 14th, 2012 at PASM Workshop, Flat C, 1/F, Block C, Chin Fat Factory Building, 3 Tsat Po Street, San Po Kong, Kowloon, Hong Kong.

PASM Workshop Is Hosting The First Open Show in Hong Kong This December
In 2008 photographer and technologist Tim Wagner saw many compelling projects languishing unseen and unpublished. Working with Adrianne Koteen and Melanie Lightfrom Fotovision he organized a social screening event called SlideSlam.
This grassroots show rapidly caught fire and presenter André Hermann came on board as our first Co-Producer. As our unique, personal format grew we relaunched as the Open Show – a name suggested by former senior editor of American Photo magazine Miki Johnson.
A GLOBAL NETWORK OF LOCAL EVENTS
In October 2010 Open Show expanded beyond our home base of San Francisco to Los Angeles under the direction of Mathieu Grandjean, who later became Open Show’s Europe Director. A month later Open Show launched in pre-revolution Cairo under Rachel Beth Anderson and Bangalore under Madhu Reddy, now Open Show’s India Director.
Open Show has transformed from our humble beginnings of 15 friends in a room into a high-profile photography and film advocacy organization with communities around the world organizing monthly shows.
POWERED BY PASSIONATE TEAMS
Open Show communities are organized by locally-based volunteer event teams lead by co-producers passionate about Open Show’s mission. Each city runs their own events using our global curating platform and support resources. Anybody can start a show or get involved with already existing ones.

Pulitzer Prize Winner Horst Faas’ Exhibit Opens in Hong Kong This Week
Two times Pulitzer Prize winner Horst Faas‘ exhibition will open this week at The Foreign Correspondents’ Club in Hong Kong. Horst Faas spent close to 50 years as a photographer with Associated Press. According to Associated Press, Faas, who died in May at age 79, will be represented by his images documenting the Vietnam War and conflicts in Algeria, Bangladesh and Congo.
“Horst Faas was a giant in the world of photojournalism,” AP Director of Photography Santiago Lyon said. “He was the dean of the photojournalistic community during the Vietnam War and was not only an extremely accomplished photographer in his own right, but also was diligent in getting as many cameras as possible out into the field, either in the hands of local photographers or his AP text reporter colleagues. This, combined with his decade-long stint in the country meant that AP had unsurpassed photographic coverage from that conflict. We are delighted to see his work on display in the august setting of The Foreign Correspondents’ Club in Hong Kong.”
The exhibit, titled “Horst Faas 1933-2012: Photographer, Associated Press,” presented in cooperation with AP, will open with a reception on Sept. 4 and continue through Sept. 30.
Non-members may view the exhibit from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and 3 to 5:30 p.m. daily.
The Foreign Correspondents’ Club is located on North Block, 2 Lower Albert Road, Central, Hong Kong. The phone number is 2521 1511.
