BarCamp was born in Palo Alto, California in 2005. In just three years, it became an international network of user generated conferences–open, participatory workshop-events with content provided by the attendees. It often focuses on early-stage Web applications and related open-source technologies, social protocols and open data formats.

In short, BarCamp is an ad-hoc “unconference” born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from attendees. Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join.

The first BarCamp in Hong Kong was held in Yahoo Hong Kong’s office in 2007 with only 100 attendees and 30 sessions. Since then it has grown to become the biggest unconference in town.

Last year’s Barcamp had 70 sessions covering topics like open source, cloud computing, accessibility, social enterprise, design thinking and more, drawing more than 700 participants from all walks of the Internet in Hong Kong: Entrepreneurs, designers, programmers, photographers, film makers, media owners, bloggers and investors.

This year marks the fifth BarCamp in Hong Kong and it would be held at The Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre, Cornwall Street, Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong tomorrow, 12 November 2011. More than 700 have signed up for this year’s event.
